Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those are national figures. What your Minneapolis yard costs depends on the material, the length, the gates, how the crew gets in from the alley and how hard the ground is to dig.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Twin Cities labor, material prices and the conditions in your yard move a job up or down within a range. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
National figures put a 6-foot privacy fence at $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below gives totals by length for the general $20 to $60 range. A 6-foot solid fence uses more lumber and heavier posts, so it prices near the top of each row.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
Check the height before you price it. Minneapolis allows 6 feet along the rear lot line, but an interior side yard is limited to 4 feet unless the house next door sits at least 5 feet from the line. A shorter side run costs less than a 6-foot one.
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link, which starts near $9 per foot. For a solid fence, pressure-treated pine with dog-ear pickets is usually the lowest price. If the goal is to keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5-foot chain link is the usual pick. One local catch: Minneapolis does not allow chain link with slats, so you cannot turn it into a privacy fence later.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Yes for iron, about even for vinyl. Aluminum runs $25 to $75 per foot, wrought iron $50 to $85 and vinyl $30 to $60. Aluminum does not rust from road salt, and an open aluminum fence can qualify for the extra front yard height the city gives to open, decorative fences.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Each gate is priced on its own, not by the foot. Width, material, hinges and latch set the price. A walk gate to the alley is the small end. A double gate wide enough for a car, or a gate with an operator, is the large end. Ask for every gate to be its own line on the quote.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
These are priced after we see the yard. Pulling out an old fence and its concrete footings, cutting back buckthorn or vines on the line, and working down a slope toward a creek or lake all add labor. So does a yard where everything has to be carried in by hand past a garage.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
The one whose scope matches the others. Put the quotes side by side and compare footage, height, lumber or vinyl grade, post size, post depth, gate count, tear-out, haul-away and cleanup. In Minnesota the post depth line matters most, because shallow posts are cheaper to set and fail first. When the written scope is the same, honest bids sit close together.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A sound fence makes a house easier to sell, mostly to buyers with dogs or kids, but do not expect to get the whole cost back. Property taxes are a separate question: how a fence affects your assessed value is up to your city or county assessor.
